The Comedy Gig – 2 December 2015

As the band grows up and real world responsibility takes over, we’ve had to adapt over the years, but one thing is for sure…we may slow down, but we never stop! Between April this year and until this gig, the world changed more for DonkeyBoxers, and there has been some great news in the band.

Drummer Greg got married in September and bass player Aaron became father to his first child, a son. Many congratulations are due to both of them. Despite more grown up and adult responsibilities we were back in the rehearsal room October onwards and really, we were dying to get on stage. So we made a return to the venue we have played a gig every year for the last 10 years, The Comedy Pub. For this gig we reworked an old song of ours that Aaron wrote in the 2005 period, but we stopped performing over the years. With this new line up we gave a brand new life to “Are We Burning Out in Hate” and rehearsed it over the last few weeks. Controversially we dropped a lot of songs that we have always played at every gig before, our stock material almost. Out were Crap Day, Out of Power, Just Walk Away and The Moment giving way to a much darker, faster and heavier set. The setlist on the night was:

  • Monument to All Your Sins
  • Euphoria
  • Hypnotised
  • Are We Burning Out in Hate?
  • Society Made Me
  • Pointless
  • The Score

Thanks as always to our supporters who came down on the night, and to Mark from Wheel Tappers Music for hosting the night and doing the sound.

Fiddler’s Elbow Gig – 10 March 2015

This is one of the gigs we would rather not have done in retrospect. Of course it is awesome to do gigs and meet our friends, and for that we are eternally grateful and fortunate. So we truly thank you for being there. From an organisational point of view, and logistics with the promoter we learnt a valuable lesson to not do such gigs ever again.

Fiddlers's Elbow

Fiddler’s Elbow ‘each band must pay £10 to hire an amp’ craziness

With no amps provided by the venue, it was suggested that all the other bands bring their own amplification and share. Normally this works fairly well if the bands can turn up to the venue with their amps and bring them in time for soundcheck. But most amateur musicians have day jobs, and as such carrying heavy amps on public transport in London is difficult. Sometimes some bands do in fact bring their amps despite this problem, and we did bring one amp. The Fiddlers Elbow promoter kept emailing bands to sort out amps between them and also kept the pressure on bands to bring at least 10 people to the gig. And if no amps would be bought we have to pay for them. Disgruntled at this, the headline band pulled out on the night, leaving 3 bands to play…and no amplification equipment available. The back-up plan was to “hire” the venue amps at £10 per amp per band. We hired two amps and singer Atul bought his amp, that was shared by the first band as well. The show went on, and we blasted out our set for our first gig of 2015. The set played on the night was:

The Miller Gig – 28 August 2014

While we struggled most of the year without a bass player, we had already lined up a gig long beforehand. It was the return of the family of Imperial bands, and the return of the big charity gig night. This one was organised at The Miller for children’s charity Evelina, and the theme of the night was Evelina rocks.

Aaron who played lead guitar for us from 2004-2006 offered to play bass for us, and we took this up. This unusually meant that for the first time in its history, all 4 members of DonkeyBox were now all alumni of Imperial College. The energy in the rehearsals was phenomenal, and preparing for the gig was a breeze. Aaron already knew many of the songs having played them on guitar, all he had to do was to relearn them on bass. There were new songs of course, but that didn’t take long to learn. The night was packed and a total hit. We were joined by Splink, Ember Daze and Between the Days. The final band is the one in which Matt and Greg also play. Not only that but we were once again joined by Martin on bass as guest bass player. 2014 was his guest bass year.

The set played on the night was:

  • Just Walk Away
  • Out of Power
  • Society Made Me
  • The Moment
  • Euphoria
  • Crap Day
  • Hypnotised
  • Pointless
  • The Score

Many thanks to all those who came down on the night, and making the night such a success, especially Aaron and Martin who played bass for us on stage.

The Comedy Gig – 15 April 2014

This was our first gig of the year. In the background we were frought were turmoil and trouble on the bass player front. We had found a bass player in February, who had only recently moved from Italy to London to follow his rock ‘n roll dream. It turned out that he had no job and wanted money from making gigs, which sadly we were not able to offer him either of. Last minute we had to let go of him. We had already booked this gig and were now in trouble as we had no bass player to play for us. Luckily, ex bass player Graham who had played the last gig stepped in and saved the day!

The set played on the night was:

  • Hypnotised
  • Just Walk Away
  • Out of Power
  • The Moment
  • Crap Day
  • Euphoria
  • The Score

Many thanks to all those who came down on the night, including ex bass player Martin.

The Comedy Gig – 23 September 2013

This gig was the debut performance of our new man on bass, Graham. Graham is a bass player and the last time we did a gig with an actual bass player was in December 2010. We had been rehearsing our core set with Graham and this gig was an awesome opportunity to introduce him to our world and friends.

The night was quite empty, but we had a total blast and played with masses of energy with our new bass player and played like we were playing to 500 people! We always make it more than worthwhile for those who turn up to our gigs…. you ROCK!

We were asked to play our signature song Crap Day once again at the end of our set. The full set list on the night was

  1. Hynotised
  2. Just Walk Away
  3. Out of Power
  4. The Moment
  5. Crap Day
  6. Pointless
  7. Terminator 3 theme
  8. The Score

The Comedy Gig – 9 July 2013

There were a whole load of really cool things going on at this gig. We launched a brand new song “Euphoria” , we gave a video interview for a blog called The Ordinary Dork and we had some photos taken of us live.
